U.S. Steel Lays Off 165 In Mon Valley

WEST MIFFLIN (KDKA) - U.S. Steel employs nearly four-thousand workers in the Mon Valley.

There are three plants and tarting Sunday, there will be less people working at the Mon Valley Works Irvin Plant in West Mifflin.

Around 165 people will no longer have a job.

But, the company says the layoffs are temporary.

It's unclear how long these workers will be laid off, and they can't predict when and how many people will get called back to work.

The spokesperson with U.S. Steel says this is all part of the continued adjustments the corporation is having to make throughout their North American flat-rolled operations.

Company spokesperson Courtney Boone said:

"Global economic factors including high levels of imports, some of which are arguably unfairly traded, reduced steel prices and fluctuating oil prices continue to impact the business."

A worker who just learned he was laid off wasn't available to go on camera, but he told KDKA's Amy Wadas the company lost a contract with major supplier General Electric.

He has been working just 32 hours a week since the beginning of the year.

In the meantime, he says he will sign up for unemployment and hope that he gets a call to go back to work.

He says that could be as early as next week, or even longer.
