CSX Officials: 12 Cars Derail In McKeesport
MCKEESPORT (KDKA) – Officials are investigating after a train derailed in McKeesport late Saturday night.
According to CSX spokesman Gary Sease, 12 cars of a CSX train derailed around 11 p.m. near the Jerome Street Bridge. The train was heading from New Castle to Connellsville.
CSX officials said the train consisted of 88 cars, four locomotives and contained a mixed freight. At least one car was believed to be carrying scrap metal.
As a result of the derailment, the McKeesport Marina was evacuated as a precaution.
"We were fishing. We were down at the docks right under the bridge," Ashley Bound said. "All of a sudden, we heard a loud – the train was loud coming across. We heard sparks and a bunch of debris was falling off the bridge and then, I saw the train derail and just a bunch of smoke. They evacuated the docks."
Officials are investigating the cause of the derailment, but witnesses said the train appeared to be going too fast.
"A train crossed about 15 minutes before that and it wasn't going as fast. But, this one seemed like it was moving with a head of steam," Pete Miller said.
There are no reported injuries.
