Top 6 Sports Broadcasters Of All-Time

We all know there's nothing better than attending a live sporting event. You get to cheer on your favorite team alongside thousands of your new and closest friends.

Unless you're on the road, and you're cheering for your favorite team among thousands of your newest enemies.

Regardless, nothing tops an in-person game experience. However, there are a select few people that can bring the game to life in your living room.

The role of the sports broadcaster is a tricky one. They need to describe the play and add anecdotes where appropriate. But, they also need to have a sense for the moment and know when words don't need to be spoken.

The best broadcasters make their call and get out of the way to let the viewer absorb the moment in all its glory.

Think of Al Michaels' "Do you believe n miracles?" call as the time ran out and the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team stunned the world.

It was short, sweet and to the point. It was simply perfect.

Then, whether he was too stunned to continue or not, Michaels went silent so you could hear the roar of a nation and watch a group of college kids celebrate their massive accomplishment.

So, which other broadcasters are masters of the craft?

93-7 The Fan's Joe Starkey and Chris Mueller sat down and came up with some contenders.

No. 6 - Doc Emrick – "He makes everything in hockey feel like it's a huge deal all the time, and it's what that sport needs," Mueller said.

No. 5 - Pat Summerall – "You can call me old, you can call me anything you want, I liked it when you could actually use your imagination a little bit and actually watch the game and didn't have to have someone filling in every second of the action. The best at that ever was Pat Summerall," Starkey said.

No. 4 - Howard Cosell – "I actually didn't like him at the time, but he's as influential as any national broadcaster ever," Starkey said.

No. 3 - Brent Musberger – "If he's on the call, you know it's a big game, plus his shameless gambling references to whatever the point spread is. Some of the lecherous stuff, the weird kind of, "There's a pretty girl in the crowd,'" Mueller said.

No. 2 - Vin Scully – "There's only one man, the best. Vin Scully is an encyclopedia who knows everything about every player," Mueller said.

No. 1 - Al Michaels – "He's as versatile as they come and he had only the most famous call in the history of sports," Starkey said.
