Tom Donahoe: 'Time Always Wins' With Veterans
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – Former Steelers general manager Tom Donahoe joined "The Fan Morning Show" Wednesday to look back at the Steelers' 2014 season and to discuss what challenges await the front office this offseason.
The biggest issue Donahoe discussed is making decisions as to whether or not to part ways with veterans Troy Polamalu, Ike Taylor, James Harrison, and Brett Keisel.
He said making these decisions is very difficult for team executives.
"It's not fun to be in that position for anybody, and you almost hope when those players do come in to talk to you, that they are coming in to retire, because it certainly makes the decision a little bit easier," Donahoe said. "It's hard to nudge people out the door that have been such a significant part of what you have done on the field. It's not an easy position to be in, but you know what, unfortunately, time always wins."
He explained that the biggest challenge in making the decision is figuring out how much a guy has left.
"It's a hard thing to do, because you never know when a player's going to hit the wall, but the problem is when he hits the wall, he never really comes back from that," Donahoe said. "You want to make sure that you've given yourself some leeway and some protection, because if you go forward with a guy that you think has another year, and you get to the middle of September and you say, 'uh oh,' it's too late."
