Toddler Found Locked In Car While Parents Went To Bar

HOMEWOOD (KDKA)- A toddler was found slumped over, sweating and unresponsive in the back seat of a car in Homewood.

According to police, the car was parked outside Lounge 7101 2nd Time Around  on Frankstown Avenue.

Police say around 12:45 a.m. someone at the bar called them to report a 2-year-old boy was left in the car, while his mother and step-father went to the bar to drink.

"The windows were cracked. The temperature was around 80 degrees with 70 percent humidity," Pittsburgh Police Spokesperson Sonya Toler  said.

As police waited outside the vehicle for medics to arrive, the boy's mother exited the bar. Police said she was visibly drunk and tried to get into the car and drive away.

"This woman was apparently intoxicated, slurred speech, blood-shot eyes," Toler said. "The officers of course stopped her. You have some questions to answer before you can just drive off."

The boy's step-father left the bar at the same time and caused a disturbance.

Terry Hymes, 30,  was arrested and charged with felony child endangerment and public intoxication. Archie Howard, 27, was also arrested. He faces charges of misdemeanor child endangerment and disorderly conduct.

"The child could not defend himself, could not do anything. You see a lot of things out there when you're a police officer. These situations involving children are definitely ones that pull at their emotions," Toler said.

Both Hymes and Howard were taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

The boy was taken to Children's Hospital and is expected to be fine. He is now in the custody of city's office of Children, Youth and Families.
