Storms Barrel Through Region Causing Damage, Power Outages

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Late-day thunderstorms, that brought heavy rains and gusty winds, barreled through the Pittsburgh region Friday evening causing some property damage and power outages.

A few of the storms were destructive and packed a powerful punch.

In the East Carnegie section of Pittsburgh, a huge pine tree was uprooted on Bell Avenue, damaging a homeowner's front porch.

A short distance away on Woodkirk Street, a section of a tree fell, narrowly missing Melanie Johnson's home.

Johnson hold KDKA-TV News, "I heard some crashing, and I assumed it was lightning. I'm just glad it didn't hurt anybody or damage anyone's property when it fell."

There was also some damage in Green Tree.

Duquesne Light says its biggest weather-related trouble spot was Oakland where 1,800 customers were temporarily left in the dark when a tree fell on a power line.

A spokeswoman said as of late Friday night, power had been restored to all customers.
