Three Rivers Arts Festival Features Local Food & Art
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Three Rivers Arts Festival has begun. A highlight is a "garden" of towering, sculpted dandelions, lining a sidewalk on Liberty Avenue, Downtown.
"The dandelions were created by a local artist, Carin Mincemoyer," says Festival program manager Sarah Aziz. "They're a pioneer species, and they will grow anywhere, and they're very nutritious. And they put their roots down, and they releae nutrients into the air. I had no idea."
The featured performer is Michael Franti, whose wide range of talents reflects the festival itself.
"We have total Artist Market booths of 350," the program manager continues. "They change out halfway through the festival. It's really more of a high art, professional artists festival."

And of course, there's no shortage of food choices. One of the most unusual installations is the Mobile Sculpture Workshop, which changes each day. It's a scrapyard sculpture of rusted metal.
"In working and designing the sculpture, we utilize the talents of local teens as apprentices in the process of making art," says sculptor Tim Kaulen. "So we teach as we build."
As for the Arrts Fest "rain tradition," Sarah Aziz says, "We have a ten-day event, so the chance it's going to rain at some point is pretty good."
