Thousands Take Part In Brentwood Independence Day Festivities

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It is one of the oldest and largest Fourth of July parades in the area. Once again, Brentwood did not disappoint.

Thousands of people lined the streets to take part in the town's annual Independence Day celebration.

For many, the day started with some exercise.

More than 2,000 people took part in the 31st Annual Brentwood Firecracker 5K.

Two soldiers from Baldwin ran the race wearing their Army fatigues and carrying about 40 pounds of gear.

"I love this day. I mean, this is why our country is here, this is why we joined the service to provide support and protect this country. So, this is actually a big day for us," Army Second Lt. Daniel Joyce said.

"It's just, 'Go Army, keep going guys, don't stop.' It's nothing but motivation to keep going, so it's good," Army Sgt. Matthew Sunseri said.

The people lining Brownsville Road showed their appreciation.

After the race, the parade kicked off.

From marching bands to fire engines, there was a lot to check out as more than 3,000 participants marched through town.

For many, this parade has become tradition.

"I've been coming to this parade probably as long as I can remember. I don't remember not coming to this parade. It's a great parade, it's great for the community," Michael Ringling said.

"It's just family, everyone getting together, neighbors, everybody. It's nice," Marianne Palma said.

The theme of this year's parade is "Hometown Stars." It's perfect considering the honorary parade marshal this year is former Brentwood resident and actor, Tom Atkins.

"I think it's just one of the best parades. They get great bands and groups that come through and the high school bands. I don't know, it feels like old-fashioned America," Atkins said.
