MONROEVILLE (KDKA) -- Huge rocks tumbled down a hillside, filled a creek and badly flooded a Monroeville road Friday morning.

A few feet of water cover Thompson Run Road and filled up the railroad underpass. Once you see the boulders in the creek, it doesn't take long to figure out what happened.

"We had a landslide, rockfall that occurred that sent debris down into the stream causing the stream to back up, which in turn is overflowing the bridge and has the road flooded at this point," Dean Poleti with PennDOT's Allegheny County Maintenance Division said.

It gets worse. There's a damaged manhole, and a sewer line may be broken, pouring sewage into the creek. They won't know for sure until they can clear out the debris in the creek and take a closer look.

"We currently have a contractor on the way. They're going to be bringing in some equipment this afternoon, and they're going to do some excavation, trying to alleviate the water," Poleti said.

The hillside appears to be stable.

PennDOT has posted the following detour:

Northbound
• Take Lower Rodi Road to Business Route 22
• Take the ramp to eastbound Business Route 22
• Follow Business Route 22 east to Northern Pike
• Turn left onto Northern Pike
• Follow Northern Pike back to Thompson Run Road

Southbound
• Same route in opposite direction

Crews are working to clear the debris from the creek. The road will remain closed until the water recedes.
