The Club at Nevillewood's 9th hole offers spectacular view with challenging approach shot | The Elite 18
COLLIER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) -- For the second year in a row, a hole from The Club at Nevillewood has made it into KDKA's Elite 18.
Golfers have been enjoying the Jack Nicklaus-designed course since it opened in 1992 and The Golden Bear hit a home run with the design of the 9th hole, a Par 4 that plays 388 yards from the member tees.
"It's challenging off the tee," said Head Golf Professional Cory Livingston. "The penalty area runs down the left side and the hillside on the right can kind of funnel everything over there when it's firm and fast. Just like #18, the second shot's the difference maker on this hole."
The 9th hole presents a challenge, but also a fun way to round out the front nine.
A long drive off of the tee will leave you a mid-to-short iron into the green, which requires an approach shot over the water.
Longer hitters off the tee may even need to be careful when conditions are firm and fast, with a creek that could come into play with a ball hit too far.
"From this set of tees, it can get close on the left side," Livingston said. It definitely can get close during the summer when it's firm and fast."
The 9th is one of only two holes of the course that doesn't feature any bunkers, but is one of three holes that does have a water feature.
Approach shots that tend to bail out left and away from the water will require a pitch or chip shot that runs away from you.
KDKA's Rich Walsh found himself in this spot, but was able to save his par with a solid putt back up the slope.
