Tekko 2014 A Colorful Celebration Of Japanese Pop Culture
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The David L. Lawrence Convention Center has an unconventional look in the current celebration of Japanese pop culture.
Costumed visitors reflect the colorful characters in Japanese animation, known as "Anime."
Tekko 2014 is the sixth Anime Convention for Amanda Gunkle of Irwin.
"I'm an art major in college," she says. "And seeing all the use of art style and anime inspires my own work."
"This is an opportunity to get with thousands of other like-minded individuals, and just share," convention CEO Peter Gaudoin says. "Our national pop culture interacts with international pop culture, you know, everything from science fiction to comic books. You might find 50 iterations of 'Alice in Wonderland' in Japanese writing."
Madeleine Yarroll plays the witch who runs a bathhouse for spirits.
"My mom suggested making a costume, if one of us would wear it," she says. "And I'm like, yes!"
"This is a wonderful opportunity to make costumes and to have fun," says Madeleine's mother, Eva Yarroll. "And then, my kids are models for everything I make!"
