Man In Police Custody After SWAT Situation In Brighton Heights

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Neighbors in one North Side community awoke to find police snipers in their front yards and the SWAT team moving up their street.

Pittsburgh Police surrounded a home in the 3400-block of Reuben Street in Brighton Heights Tuesday morning.

The man inside reportedly has a psychiatric history.

Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler told KDKA's Kym Gable the man was armed with a knife and was demanding that police "shoot him in the head."

Toler says the man continued to exit and enter the home.

This made for an unsettling morning for neighbors, many of whom were told to stay inside their homes. Mercer Napper says one of the SWAT officers was positioned on his property.

"He was lying under one of my pine trees," Napper said. "And I'm thinking, 'Oh, if necessary, that boy's going to take a shot!'"

The standoff ended shortly after noon.

"Police ... decided to do two flash bangs and then he agreed at that point that he needed to surrender," Toler said.

The man, whose name was not yet being released, was taken first the hospital for observation.

Toler said he will likely be transported to the Allegheny County Jail soon.
