SWAT Situation Ends In McKees Rocks, Suspect Still On The Loose

MCKEES ROCKS (KDKA) - Police and SWAT team members surrounded a home in McKees Rocks late Tuesday night and through Wednesday morning.

The situation all started around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police were called to a home along the 800-block of Frank Street for a domestic dispute, in which a man is accused of threatening to kill a woman with his shotgun.

"It's like living in a war zone, " said neighbor Robert Simmons.

Police have identified the suspect as 54-year-old Paul Dolan. They say that Dolan threatened a woman inside the home and then forced a man inside the home into the basement.

The woman said Dolan had a shotgun and threatened to kill her. She was able to leave the house and call 911, but the man was taken hostage.

"Mr. Dolan had taken him into the cellar," said McKees Rocks Police Chief Jim Lauria. "He said, 'Stay here, I'll be back.' As he was leaving, he knocked the lights out by breaking the light bulbs."

Police found that man hiding in the dark basement when SWAT finally entered the home around 5 a.m. Dolan was gone and weapons, including a shotgun were recovered. The windows on his house are boarded up, which made entry into the home difficult.

"It appears it was fortified. You know, it was boarded up by the windows and it looked like it was fortified," said Chief Lauria. "It makes it difficult for us to make entry."

That's when the Allegheny County Police SWAT team was called in.

Dolan is described as having gray hair and a ponytail. He is 5-feet-11-inches tall and police say he is known in the McKees Rocks area.

The police chief says they don't know when Dolan left his home.

"The houses up there are very close together," added Chief Lauria. "They're old and they have cubby holes and all kinds of rebuild issues. He could've done it anytime."

Neighbors say Dolan is known to be paranoid.

Police are not sure if he has any other weapons with him.

Once arrested, Dolan will face a long list of charges including making terroristic threats and aggravated assault.

The local magistrate's office and police station are under extra security Wednesday as well. On Tuesday, Dolan was waiting for a court appearance at the magistrate's office and got into a heated argument with an officer.  The exchange resulted in an attempted assault charge.
