Man shot by state police during domestic incident in Fayette County
Georges Township (KDKA) - A man is in the hospital and facing charges after he was shot by state troopers in a small Fayette County community.
State police said it all started as a domestic incident. They said a man came out of a home wielding multiple knives before troopers shot him.
State police shut down a quiet road in Georges Township with crime scene tape and flares.
It was just before 4:45 a.m. Wednesday morning when troopers responded to a home on Amend Road for a domestic incident between a man and his mother.
Trooper Kalee Barnhart with Troop B, Uniontown said when troopers arrived to the family residence, they encountered 43-year-old Thomas Conroy who had knives in his hands.
"Conroy exited the residence while holding multiple knives and failed to listen to commands of troopers and continued to approach troopers with knives in his hand. That caused troopers to discharge a firearm," said Tpr. Barnhart.
Tpr. Barnhart said Conroy was struck and was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital. Troopers said he's in stable condition.
"We just know that he was struck multiple times, and like I said, Troop B Major Case Team is on scene and is actively investigating this incident," she said.
State police said they planned to file charges against Conroy. Possible charges they mentioned included aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and simple assault for the domestic incident with his mom.
According to new court documents, Conroy has been charged with simple assault and harassment.
