PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Tuesday was deadline day for the Steelers to trim their roster to 53 players.

NFL teams were required to finalize their 53-player rosters by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, but the Steelers began cutting players on Monday.

Ahead of the league-manded 4 p.m. deadline on Tuesday, the Steelers waived linebackers Kyron Johnson, Luquay Washington, Jacoby Windmon, and Marcus Haynes, defensive backs Zyon Gilbert and Thomas Graham, defensive linemen Willington Previlon and Jacob Slade, offensive linemen Tykeem Doss and Joey Fisher, quarterback John Rhys Plumlee, running backs Aaron Shampklin and Jack Colletto, tight ends Matt Sokol and Rodney Williams, and wide receivers Jaray Jenkins, Duece Watts, and Dez Fitzpatrick.

Wide receiver Quez Watkins and running backs La'Mical Perine and Jonathan Ward were also released.

Rookies Ryan Watts and Julius Welschof were placed on the reserve/injured list. Offensive lineman Dylan Cook and linebacker Jeremiah Moon were also placed on the reserve/injured list with a designation to return later in the season.

Linebacker Cole Holcomb was placed on the physically unable to perform list.

The team also reportedly signed running back Boston Scott to the practice squad.

The team has a week off before the regular season gets underway in early September. The Steelers kick off their season on Sept. 8 when they travel to Atlanta to face the Falcons.
