Steelers' Legend Franco Harris Takes The Cake In New Super Bowl Ad
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The scenario: Franco Harris shows up at an "Immaculate Reception" by jumping out of a wedding cake. But it's really part of a Super Bowl ad for a website building company.
"The cake was right here, and then they had the bride and groom come over," says Andrew Hutchinson, general manager of the Twentieth Century Club in Oakland. He indicates the area where a portion of the commercial was taped.
"Our understanding was Franco was getting into the wedding business, and for a fee he could show up at your wedding and cut the cake with you, pose for photos," said Hutchinson. "And that was sort of the premise of the Immaculate Reception, as we were told the idea. And it wasn't until, obviously, the news report came out later in the shooting that we got the idea that it was a little bit more."
The Twentieth Century Club has hosted many a party in its 120 years. But this is the first time it has been the site of a Super Bowl ad.
Franco Harris isn't the only former NFL star to be featured in the commercial.
Ex-Cowboy Emmitt Smith pretends to have a nightclub where he teaches line dancing. Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre ponders a barbecue business. And the never-shy Terrell Owens has a gig called "Humble Pies."
The idea is to get attention for an Israel-based website company called Wix.
As for Franco's cake, the club manager says, "The prop shop has a normal cake that people can rent that they can jump out of, but Franco being an ex-NFL player, the cake had to be modified a little bit."
"Immaculate Receptions" for weddings. You know, that just might work.
