Stanley Cup Pays Special Visit To Seneca Valley Students
BUTLER COUNTY (KDKA) – Some students in the Seneca Valley School District got a very special surprise today - the chance to see the Stanley Cup in person.
The President of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation brought it to three Seneca Valley schools: Seneca Valley Intermediate School, Rowan Elementary School and Haine Middle School.
"The Cup is meant to be shared," says Dave Soltesz, President of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. "All the employees that have had the Cup, the players, they share the Cup. This is my day to share the Cup [with] friends, family and students."
A young boy wearing a Sidney Crosby jersey was the first one to get his hands on it. Then, a group of teachers and staff posed for some pictures.
Eventually, the Cup was wheeled backstage to the school's auditorium during an assembly. A few more pictures, and then the big reveal. As the curtain rose, students cheered when they realized what was on stage.
One student said there were rumors going around that someone was going to bring the Cup to school, but most students didn't believe them.
"I was shocked to be honest with you," said Christian, a student. "I thought, you know, well, rumors could be rumors. But when I saw it, I was like, dang! This is pretty cool."
Julie Callahan, another student, said, "I was pretty excited. I mean, [I was] very surprised."
Jared Nabry, also a student, added, "I was very shocked. It looked great. It looked so much better in person. It was great to bring one back to Pittsburgh finally after so long. This was my first time seeing the Cup, and it was fantastic."
Students at two schools in the Murrysville area also got a chance to see it. In all, about 4,500 students spent a few minutes with the Stanley Cup on Friday.
