Stabbing Victims Continue Recovery, Most Seriously Injured Teen Still Critical
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Twenty-four people were injured during Wednesday's stabbings at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, but less than half remain in the hospital.
Two students were released from Forbes Hospital Thursday, including Brett Hurt, the boy who pushed his friend out of the way of the suspect.
KDKA's Brenda Waters Reports:
Five boys still remain there. They range in age from 15-to-17 years old.
Three are still being treated in the ICU, and two of those three will have to undergo more surgery.
At Children's Hospital, two boys – ages 14 and 17 – remain in fair condition. Three students were treated and released on Wednesday.
The one adult who was injured was treated at UPMC Mercy on Wednesday and was released that same day. And at UPMC East, six students were also treated and released Wednesday.
The most seriously injured though remains in critical condition at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
KDKA's Brenda Waters Reports:
Jared Boger, 17, was coming down a stairway as the fire alarm sounded at Franklin Regional High School on Wednesday morning. Another student ran up to him.
That student, police say, was 16-year-old Alex Hribal. When Hribal pulled away, it was clear that Boger was bleeding from a single stab wound to his left side.
"Fortunately, for this young man, the knife missed his heart and his aorta," said trauma surgeon Dr. Louis Alarcon.
Within minutes of arriving at UPM Presbyterian Hospital, Boger was in the OR for damage control surgery. The stab wound was two inches wide and penetrating nearly to his spine.
The knife had pierced his liver, diaphragm and major blood vessels.
But one of Boger's trauma surgeons, Dr. Juan Carlos Puyana, is convinced that the injuries would have been more lethal with a different weapon.
"If what happened yesterday had happened with someone with a gun, I think we would have been seeing a completely different scenario," said Dr. Puyana.
KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson Reports:
Boger is still in critical condition.
"But overall, he's doing much better than we was yesterday," said Dr. Puyana.
Late Wednesday night, Boger had more damage control surgery to stop bleeding. He remains intubated in the intensive care unit, but he is responding.
It's a blessing for his family, and an indication that his brain function is intact.
Boger and his dad just love baseball.
The teen is also on the ski patrol at Seven Springs Resort.
They gave KDKA this statement: "Our entire mountain family is deeply saddened by this tragedy and all of our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Jared, the other victims, their families, friends and loved ones."
KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson Reports:
Jared's younger brother, Carter, is keeping everyone posted on Twitter: "He's a young individual, so he should fare well, but because of the magnitude of the injuries, we still go one day at a time."
There will be more surgeries for Boger, but doctors are hopeful that his injuries will not affect his future health.
