St. Vincent College Making Final Preparations Ahead Of Steelers Training Camp
LATROBE (KDKA) -- The consensus around the NFL is that no team runs a more fan-friendly camp than the Steelers at St. Vincent College.
The staff at St. Vincent is proud of that distinction and the visibility it brings, and they're always working to make the experience even better.
From the souvenirs in the campus bookstore to other merchandise.
"Some new things such as kids' toys, puzzles," said Fr. Anthony Grossi, the director of the St. Vincent College Bookstore. "Our T-shirts always change every year, so we're looking forward to those. Anything from sharpie markers to sunscreen."
To the yearly changes on the Steelers training table, including higher protein snacks to go with the usual.
"Roughly 10,000 five-ounce pieces of chicken, close to about 2,000 pounds of beef, roughly about 2,000 pounds of fish," said Executive Chef Daniel Keeley. "And probably about, they eat about, 100 pounds of vegetables a day."
St. Vincent officials are well aware a trip to Steelers camp for those from the area and across Steelers Nation is an event, so it's most important to make sure every fan can be a part of it.
"We've never had to turn anybody away," said Steven Brown, the director of public safety at St. Vincent College. "They may not be the most convenient places to park, but at least there's places that they can come and enjoy the camp."
This year, fans will see a familiar-looking red neighborhood trolley in honor of the school's Fred Rogers Center.
Most of the trolley's riders will be wearing their black and gold; but on Aug. 13 and 14, some will be wearing their red and blue as the Steelers welcome the Buffalo Bills to campus for two days of joint practices.
"We're anticipating a large crowd, at least a contingent from the Buffalo Bills. "We're preparing. We're looking at our parking to see what we're going to be able to do," said Brown.
Some important dates to keep in mind for training camp this year:
- July 26 is the first practice open to fans
- The team practices almost every afternoon starting at 2:55 p.m., minus a few days off here and there
- There are two night practices – Aug. 1 and 14
- Camp wraps up on Aug. 16
