Death Toll From Easter Sunday Terror Attacks In Sri Lanka Nears 300

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CBS) -- At least nine bombs tore through churches and hotels in three Sri Lankan cities on Easter Sunday.

The death toll had risen to at least 290, with more than 500 others wounded, by Monday morning.

Defense Minister Ruwan Wijewardene described the coordinated blasts as a terrorist attack by religious extremists.

Bishop David Zubik released the following statement on the bombing: "My heart, the hearts of all Christians, and of all compassionate people are grieving over the terrorist attack on Catholics and others this Easter in Sri Lanka. As we pray for the dead and wounded, and for peace in that wounded land, I ask everyone to seek ways to bring help and hope to victims of religious persecution worldwide."
