Juvenile Arrested Following South Side Robbery, Carjacking

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Police are still searching for one of two suspects involved in a South Side car robbery Tuesday morning.

It happened at the intersection of East Carson Street and South 20th Street around 4:15 a.m.

The victim reported he was parking his car when two men approached him. One appeared to have a gun under his sweatshirt.

The two suspects took the victim's vehicle and drove away. They eventually crashed the car into a retaining wall in Knoxville and ran from the scene.

One of the suspects was apprehended and treated at UPMC Children's Hospital for minor injuries. He is in custody.

The robbery on the South Side's main road sparked a mixed reaction from local businesses and residents.

"I've never felt really uncomfortable leaving the store or coming to the store at any hour," said Zack Edgar, owner of Zeds in the South Side. "I know there's cameras just about everywhere."

The city increased security in the South Side in 2017, adding several cameras between 10th and 19th Streets. Last year, they announced crime had decreased in the area by 37 percent.

One long-time resident feels it hasn't been enough, especially away from the bars and restaurants.

"It's not South Side anymore," Linda said. "I don't even walk with a purse. So, I think somebody better step up and do something because we had a good place here."

Opinions from those who did not want to speak on-camera were mixed.

Some never felt concerned for their safety at work, while others felt crime had recently increased in the area.
