South Side, North Shore, and downtown all part of BikePGH's Open Streets Pittsburgh event

Open Streets Pittsburgh returns today

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - On Sunday, the City of Pittsburgh opened its streets to walkers, runners, and bicyclists with the return of the very popular open streets event series.

Bike Pittsburgh

Normally, the Pittsburgh city streets are all hustling and bustling with cars, trucks, and buses, but today, for a few short hours, the streets were turned over to pedestrians.

People took to the streets, both on two feet and two wheels to celebrate Open Streets Pittsburgh.

Eric Boerer of Bike Pittsburgh says this is a great way for people to get out and see the Steel City.

"The event closes down a number of streets throughout the city. Today it goes from the North Side, all the way through the Downtown, all the way to the South Side, and it is intended to give Pittsburghers a chance to see what the city could be like without cars. Walk, bike, skateboard, roller skate, do whatever you want, and experience the city in a completely different way."

This is an always popular event in town and folks like Michael Day and William Bey think that this is a perfect way to get out and get some exercise.

"Always looking forward to Open Streets man, every year. Every year. I try to do everyone, you know, and I will be looking forward to it."

Marie Kalivoda from Gibsonia says that she loves the contrast of this event to other biking events in the city.

"We did the Bike Pittsburgh last year when it was held in Lawrenceville, that whole area, so we thought this would be interesting and it's a whole different game. We get to go through the Armstrong Tunnel and onto the South Side. So that was kind of nice," Kalivoda added.

And John Barlamas and Bob Grene from Conway said that after all this biking today, they are going to need a cool reward.

Chris: What are you going to binge on when you get home?

"Miller Light," John said with a laugh.

Open Streets Pittsburgh won't just be this weekend, it will also happen on Sunday, June 25, and Sunday, July 30.
