Snow Creates Traffic Tie-Ups In Western Pennsylvania
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Overnight snowfall covered most of Western Pennsylvania Friday, beautiful in the air, but problematic on some local streets. A tractor trailer overturned on the off-ram at Fort Duquesne Boulevard.
It's believed the weather also contributed to an accident at Allegheny River Boulevard and Washington Boulevard.
"We had about 60 or 70 trucks out almost through the night, yesterday afternoon and through tonight," said Mike Gable, the director of Public Works for the city of Pittsburgh. He explained, the temperature altered the plan for treating the roads.
"The rock salt is only effective down to 15 degrees and of course overnight it was 10 degrees so, we treat our loads with calcium chloride. It makes the rock salt a little more effective. "

Gable said the sun is also an aid to clear snow-covered roads.
"Rock salt and calcium chloride isn't the magic formula," said Gable. "Here you have a day when the sun is out a little. You're going to see the streets are going to be melting. whatever has been salted you're going to see it melting."
Four students were on a school van when it collided with a car near Boggs Avenue and Kohlmeyers Lane in Beltzhoover. No one was injured.
"I just think they need to be a little bit cautious with their driving, even though they see it's wet, just be careful with their driving, take it easy, they'll get there. We'll be on the streets eventually to salt them," added Gable.
By late morning Friday, the snow had mostly cleared and bitter cold temperatures settled it.
