Six people displaced after fire destroys a Fayette County home
SALTLICK TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) -- Six people were displaced after a fire destroyed a house in Fayette County on Monday morning.
The fire started at approximately 4 a.m. on Hillview Drive in Saltlick Township. While everyone got out safely, firefighters returned to the scene nearly 10 hours after the home first caught fire because of smoldering concerns.
"It was terrifying," said neighbor Dallas Carson.
She wasn't home at the time, but she could see smoke miles away and knew it wasn't good.
"I freaked out. I was on the verge of tears," Carson said.
The house is a total loss. Chief Jerry Gales says the home had an addition on the back, and that's where the fire originated. He says the roof collapsed, making it more dangerous to put the fire out.
"Having the roof collapse, that's always a major difficulty," Chief Gales said.
Firefighters from seven departments remained on the scene for hours to stop the flames from spreading.
"We're probably going to have to have an excavator come in and pick the stuff out. We got shingles, wood, whatever household materials they had in that section of the house."
The grandfather of one of the men who lived in the house came to the scene while KDKA-TV was there. He says it's hard to look at what's left without thinking of how it could have been much worse.
"I got up out of bed and came right up here, and it was on fire," John Johnson added. "I wanted to make sure they all got out."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
