Sid Bream Hopes Disappointment Of '92 NLCS Was Exorcised In Atlanta
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - Sid Bream is a Pirate alum and he is loved by the fans to this day. He was also an Atlanta Brave for a time.
In 1992, he scored the game-winning run for the Braves to send them to the World Series. As for the Pirates, they had to endure the following 20 years of losing seasons.
Whether Bream was really safe or out has been debated for over 20 years.
Last night, when the Pirates beat the Braves in Atlanta to clinch a playoff spot, many fans felt like the demons of the 1992 NLCS was exorcised.
So, how does Bream feel about it all? He joined the "KDKA Morning News" with Larry Richert and John Shumway to talk about it.
"I'm extremely happy for the Pirates. There [was] no doubt in my mind [they would make the playoffs]. Now, they can go ahead and do something as far as [winning the] division instead of just getting the Wild Card," Bream said.
Bream isn't sure if the win in Atlanta puts all the disappointment of 20 years to an end for the fans because he feels the playoff appearance last year did most of that.
A lot of Pirates fans to this day claim that Pittsburgh catcher Mike Lavaliere tagged Bream out at the plate. How often does Bream get asked?
Bream says it is quite a bit.
"Every place I go in Pittsburgh, Atlanta, or wherever, [I can't] go out in public without somebody coming up to me and talking about that play," he said.
Bream now speaks around the country and told a story about getting harassed during a speech.
"A couple years ago [in the Pittsburgh area] I literally had somebody in the middle of my serious talk [stand up] in the middle of my talk and said, 'You were out,'" Bream said. "I have a lot of fun with it."
Bream lives in the Pittsburgh area and says the Pirates' next step is to chase the Cardinals and capture the division crown.
"Then, they don't have to worry about that one-game play-in," Bream said.
