4 schools put on lockdown for shots fired near Westinghouse Academy

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A lockdown was lifted at four Pittsburgh Public Schools after shots were fired near Westinghouse Academy on Wednesday afternoon.

Gunshots went off on Brushton Avenue around 1:15 p.m., but no one was injured and a suspect was taken into custody.

A spokesperson for Pittsburgh Public Schools said Pittsburgh Crescent, Faison, Student Achievement Center and Westinghouse went into lockdown while police searched for the suspect.

All schools in the district already were scheduled to operate on a modified lockdown Wednesday, a day after a gunman killed 19 children and two adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

After the tragedy in Texas, families said the incident near Westinghouse Academy was especially terrifying.

Eighth grader Katia Cobb said she couldn't stop thinking that what happened at Robb Elementary could happen at her school.

"Somebody could try to repeat what that person did in Texas and come here and do it," she said. "Yeah, it was scary."

Her family said even getting someone in custody is little consolation.

"Come on, come on, look what's happening," Bernadette Gee said. "It's not just happening once a year, it's happening once a month."

Police said after responding to the shots fired, they found that a home on Monticello Street had been hit.

While sweeping the area, police said they found guns and drugs in plain view. After obtaining a search warrant, they seized cocaine, marijuana, an AR-15 style gun and a handgun.
