Shooting Prompts Lockdown At Clairton City School District

CLAIRTON (KDKA) -- An early-morning shooting prompted a lockdown at the nearby Clairton City High School.

The shooting happened around 7:30 a.m. in the 700-block of Warrington Avenue near a Dollar General store.

According to emergency dispatchers, the victim was shot in the back and a male suspect was reportedly spotted running from the scene.

Following the incident, the school lockdown was put in place by Clairton Police and school officials as a precaution.

School district officials say the lockdown lasted about 15 to 20 minutes. Students and staff already in the building were in lock down mode, but some were still arriving for the day.

Those parents who were still dropping off their children were directed away from the area.

The lockdown was lifted at 8:05 a.m.

In a statement on their website, the school district says, "All students and staff are safe and the lock down has been lifted. Clairton City School District's number one concern and priority is the safety of our students and staff, and we followed the recommendation of the local police department to have continued safety. School is open and in session with the planned 11:30 am dismissal."
