Security Guard, Suspect Scuffle Over $37K Rolex
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Surveillance video shows a jewelry store security guard struggle with a man police say tried to steal watch worth $37,500.
It happened earlier this week at Henne Jewelers in Shadyside.
And it turns out, it's not the first time this guard has jumped into action in an impressive way.
Police say 22-year-old Taquan Knight snatched a Rolex watch out of the hand of an employee and then bolted.
That's when security guard Mike Blake, a retired police officer, says he tackled him. He says the suspect fell into a glass case but then got up a ran to the doors.
"I was going down and grabbing at him and grabbing at him, and he fell into the glass and got back up," said Blake.
Blake, however, was able to activate the security system, and the doors locked before the suspect could get out.
Henne Jewelers says another jewelry store out of state also wonders if Knight might have been the person who robbed them too.
"I got a call from a friend of mine who has a jewelry store in New Jersey thanking us -- and thanking Mike in particular, for catching the guy," said John Henne.
The guard held on to the suspect until police arrived, but there was a struggle. In fact, he says the suspect managed to pry open the doors enough to get his one foot outside.
Earlier this year, Blake chased down a man suspected of shoplifting at store across the street.
"I wanted to get him ... when something like that happens, I just want to get them," said Blake.
