Seahawks Legion Of Boom Goes All-Pro

By Matthew Asher

Here comes the boom! Seattle's talented secondary group was honored this week as three members were selected for All-Pro honors this season.

Even before the New Orleans Saints defeated the Philadelphia Eagles to secure their date with the ‘Hawks in the divisional round of the playoffs, things were pretty busy. Other than the return of Percy Harvin to practice, the big news was Seattle’s defense being recognized for the level of talent and the ability to properly utilize that talent as the Legion of Boom, safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor and cornerback Richard Sherman were all named to this year’s All-Pro teams.

Chancellor finished with 99 total tackles, three forced fumbles and three interceptions of his own. Thomas finished the season with 105 tackles, five interceptions and two forced fumbles. Sherman may have only finished with 49 tackles, but he picked off a team-leading eight interceptions this season and even returned one of them for a touchdown.

Thomas and Sherman were selected to the All-Pro’s first team and Chancellor was named to the second-team. This is the second straight year that both Thomas and Sherman have been selected to the first-team. This is Chancellor’s first All-Pro selection of his career.

Head coach Pete Carroll was of course very pleased with the news. “I think it’s a great tribute to those guys and who they are, how hard they’ve prepared and how hard they’ve work,” Carroll said. “I think it does demonstrate if you play really well with the guys around you it can help your play. These guys have fed off one another in the years they’ve been here."

Earl Thomas was especially vocal about what the All-Pro selections mean to himself and the other members of the Legion of Boom. This is actually the third straight year he has been selected for All-Pro honors. "It just shows how connected we are how we were able to elevate this season from Week 1 to now," Thomas said. "I'm just proud of Kam. I don't think he gets the credit he deserves. He's done a great job. He's elevated his game. I don't think he has a weakness right now."

This is actually the second time in Carroll’s coaching career that he’s had three secondary players selected to the All-Pro team, and the first time in nearly 20 years. Back in 1995 when Carroll was the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, cornerback Eric Davis and safeties Merton Hanks and Tim McDonald were all selected for All-Pro honors.

Kickoff for the divisional round game against New Orleans is scheduled for 1:25 pm PDT.
