School bus crashes into home in West Mifflin

1 person hospitalized after school bus crashes into building in West Mifflin

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. (KDKA) - A school bus barreled into a home and got stuck in West Mifflin Thursday afternoon.

A disturbing sight, but there were no kids on the bus, and it seems no serious injuries were suffered.

It took several hours before crews could begin removing the bus from a house in West Mifflin. It was wedged into the house so tightly that restoration crews had to build supports to keep the second floor from collapsing.

"Holy Moses!" next-door resident Scott Gunn exclaimed after watching the accident.

Gunn from West Mifflin Collision on Homestead Duquesne Road was working at his desk Thursday afternoon and happened to look up at his surveillance cameras when he saw this school bus from sun coach lines coming straight for the house next door.

"I ran out right away. And then, a neighbor came out with me, and we looked in and found just a lady there," Gunn added. "I opened up the emergency door and hopped up to make sure there were no kids there and was talking to her. We got her out."

Police said no kids were on the bus.

One of the three people who live in the home tells KDKA he was the only person inside and was upstairs when the crash happened. Their dog was downstairs but managed to get out of harm's way.

The West Mifflin fire chief said the driver of the bus was transported to the hospital, and her condition is unknown.

"She was a little hysterical. I told her, 'Listen, things happen, everybody's okay,'" Gunn said.

Re-watching the surveillance video, the bus hit a Honda minivan, dodged a telephone pole, and even knocked into a Buick before barreling into the house.

The bus peeled back part of the roof and did serious damage to the front exterior and living room.

The West Mifflin Area School District issued a statement to KDKA Thursday evening regarding the incident.

"The District is aware of the bus incident that occurred this afternoon and has been in contact with our transportation provider.  There were no students on the bus at the time of the incident," Superintendent Jeffrey Soles said. "The bus was finished with its run from the Middle School. The bus driver was alright, too.

Again, no students were on the bus at the time of the incident. We will remain in contact with the transportation provider until the incident is cleared. There will be no interruptions to transportation services."
