'Scary Clown Threats': Philadelphia Police, Schools Probe Social Media Posts

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - School officials and police in Philadelphia say they are investigating social media posts with what they called "scary clown threats" that are now specifically mentioning district schools.

Officials said in a joint statement meant to reassure parents and school communities that the school district's Office of School Safety alerted city police and the Office of Homeland Security on Saturday after learning about what they called "these disturbing social media posts."

Both said the safety of children and communities surrounding the schools is a top priority, and they are "taking this matter seriously" Police are investigating the social media posts and pursuing those responsible. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators.

Police have encouraged caution amid reports in a number of states of people dressed like clowns and acting suspiciously.
