Route 8 Shut Down After Crash

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Part of Route 8 had to be shut down Thursday afternoon after a bad accident.

Officials say a vehicle crashed on the road near Glenshaw Crossing in Shaler.

Allegheny County officials say the accident also brought live wires down on the roadway.

Route 8 between Pennview to the Clenshaw Crossing was closed in both directions for several hours, but is now reopened in both directions. Duquesne Light had to make repairs to a utility pole that was knocked down.

The driver wasn't injured, but was certainly shaken up.

"We were driving from one job to another," said van driver Bob Burkhart, "traveling ... southbound on Route 8, heading to pick up a helper and a woman in the southbound lane, and she was a little bit over the white line, so I got over in the next lane and when I did that, my wheel caught the curb. And it just pulled me in a little bit further and before I knew it, the corner caught the pole and the van rolled over."

Burkhart was able to pull himself out of the vehicle.

Traffic was rerouted onto Mt. Royal Boulevard and Butler Plank Road while the road was shut down.
