Murder Suspect In Custody Following High-Speed Police Chase Ending On Route 51

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Two people are in custody after allegedly leading police on a chase that ended on Route 51.

A suspected murderer from South Carolina led Canonsburg Police on a more than 20-mile chase into Pittsburgh this afternoon.

The chase went from I-79 and onto the Parkway West before it came to a stop on Route 51 near the BP on Sawmill Run Boulevard. There were no injuries.

The chase was up to speeds of 90 mph or more, but police say they had no choice. The man is accused of shooting and killing a woman in Greenville, South Carolina before carjacking a van and heading to Canonsburg.

Police eventually threw down a spike strip and grabbed the suspect and a female companion on foot.

Police consider the suspect a dangerous man and said they had to pursue him. They were aided by the fact there is little traffic because of the coronavirus outbreak keeping most people at home.
