Route 28 Lanes Shifting, Parkway West Barriers Added
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Just in time for the Steelers' home opener, Route 28 drivers are getting a gift from PennDOT.
"It is the last major traffic change, and a major for the positive," said PennDOT's Dan Cessna.
Because southbound 28 traffic now has two lanes all the way; and northbound, while it's still only a single lane, you are on the new pavement in the center of the road.
"Now, with all the traffic pushed against the newly-constructed wall, we'll be able to do the final reconstruction of the lanes closest to the railroad," Cessna said.
The end of the long suffering for Route 28 drivers can be measured in weeks.
"You can see the end now, and we're going to work hard to get there, Cessna said.
Here's the bottom line for Steelers fans, if you are coming to the home opener on Sunday and you're coming in on Route 28, with the new configuration and all lanes open, you'll have a clear shot to the North Shore.
But if you're a Steelers fan using the Parkway West to or from the game, you might run into some problems.
"Plan ahead so you get there for kickoff," says Cessna.
Crews will be working overnight tonight creating the Rosslyn Farms to Carnegie construction zone.
"The inbound lanes will also be restricted narrower and we'll have jersey barriers installed," Cessna said.
Major problems aren't expected.
However, Cessna says, "If you have any type of a fender bender, any activity there, it can just close a lane immediately and cause major congestion, and that resulting congestion can last a while."
Outbound on the Parkway, the narrowed lanes have already proven they can snarl traffic, so the post-game rush could be interesting.
"With all the lanes open, they're just a little bit narrower. Hopefully, the delays will be minor," Cessna added.
