Section Of Route 28 Closes After Deadly Head-On Collision

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A section of Route 28 closed Saturday morning due to a head-on collision.

Route 28 closed in both directions for about two hours between 31st and Chestnut Street after a head-on collision that occurred around 10 a.m.

All lanes reopened by 3 p.m.

According to Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler, a car was driving the wrong way on the northbound side of Route 28 and crashed head-on into another vehicle. The wrong-way driver was transported to Allegheny General Hospital and was in traumatic arrest. The other driver was sent to UPMC Presbyterian, their condition is unknown.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the driver who caused the collision has died. He has been identified as Perry Kastanias, 81, of Millvale.

Both Pittsburgh EMS Rescue Trucks were on scene, along with Ross EMS.
