Roman Bar Offers Steelers Sanctuary For Pittsburghers Abroad
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Sure there are Steelers bars all over the country, but it turns out there's also one in Rome, Italy.
A KDKA viewer travelling there sent a photo of a the bar, including a Steelers helmet-wearing Jesus statue.
Mary Ann and Keith Hart of Wheeling, W. Va., say the bar is called La Botticella and is located a block from the Piazza Navonna.
The Harts say it doesn't open until 5 p.m. and serves only drinks. When they visited, they say it was filled with people from Pittsburgh.
And their visit wouldn't be complete if they didn't come back with an Italian Terrible Towel reading "asciugamano (towel) terrible."
The owner told the Post-Gazette in a 2009 interview that after it opened, many Penn State and Duquesne University students from Pittsburgh studying abroad would stop by.
Pictures online show the bar covered in pennants from various Pittsburgh-area schools and Steelers memorabilia.
That's when it started turning into a Steelers bar, as students asked to watch Steelers and Penguins games on the bar's satellite TV.
Now it's become a haven for Pittsburgh travelers in Rome.
