Roethlisberger Undergoes Knee Surgery, Timeline For Return Unknown

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A day after suffering a torn meniscus, Ben Roethlisberger underwent successful surgery this morning.

Head coach Mike Tomlin issued the following statement:

"Ben Roethlisberger underwent a successful outpatient arthroscopic surgery on his left knee this morning. He is now recovering at home and is expected to make a full recovery. Though we do not know a specific timetable for when he will be able to return to the field, we are confident this injury is not long-term."

Roethlisberger suffered the injury during the second quarter of Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins.

He hobbled to the locker room and missed one series late in the second quarter when he hyperextended his knee scrambling on a play that resulted in an interception by Reshad Jones.

"That's when our doctor thinks it happened. He thinks he grabbed my right foot and my left leg kind of hyper-extended," Roethlisberger said. "I don't know when I did it, I just know it happened before the throw."

"The meniscus is the white, rubbery cushion that protects us, it acts as a small joint protector between the femur and the tibia," said Dr. Richard Cunningham.

Roethlisberger finished 19 for 34 for 189 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
