Leaders discuss redeveloping Allegheny Riverfront Park's Upper Promenade
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Allegheny Riverfront Park Upper Promenade is only about three blocks long and 40 feet wide. But the little park is about to get a big makeover.
On Wednesday morning, local organizations met with community members and leaders to talk about the redevelopment of the Allegheny Riverfront Park's Upper Promenade.
The park is lightyears ahead of where it was in the early 1990s. Back then, it wasn't even a park. It was just a 6-foot-wide sidewalk. Once a green space was established, it wasn't long before it started seeing heavy usage and now, it needs some love.
They talked about how to allocate the almost $6 million dollars in grants that have been given, addressing everything from cracked and missing flagstones to poor lighting and foot traffic issues.
Riverlife, one of the main organizations leading the redevelopment, says they want to think of better ways to utilize the space that is already there and make it more accessible to residents and visitors alike.
"Today is a really important day," said Matthew Galluzzo, Riverlife president and CEO. "We are focused on creating spaces that are welcoming, safe and are thriving. So we know this space needs a lot of love and our job is to really make sure that as we are investing resources, what we are doing is informed by the public."
The park redevelopment project hopes to get underway in the next year and hopefully the space will become a much more welcoming area for everyone in the city.
