The City of Duquense Police Department said two families who lived in the building were evacuated on Friday.

"We evacuated the building, and we have American Red Cross to help find shelter for the displaced families," Duquesne Police Chief Thomas Dunlevy said. "Right now, the utilities have been shut off."

After inspection, there is now a belief that there is a danger of further collapse, officials say.

The building was deemed unfit for human occupancy.

Hamilton Avenue is closed in the area of North 4th Street to Strawberry Alley until crews can stabilize the structure, officials say.

"The fire department did an amazing job of getting that place evacuated," Dunlevy said. "They certainly put themselves at risk to go in and get the people out."

One resident reported that the ceiling in her apartment was falling down.

The chief said the owner and a restoration company will be on the scene this weekend to see if the apartment can be repaired.

Officials say it also appears that the brick facade came loose and fell onto the sidewalk.
