Report: Hurricanes' GM Denies Jordan Staal Trade Rumors
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Rumors began to swirl over the weekend that the Penguins and General Manager Jim Rutherford had expressed interest in attempting to reacquire forward Jordan Staal.
As CBSSports.com Hockey Writer Chris Peters writes though, Carolina Hurricanes General Manager Ron Francis has other ideas.
In the link above, Peters cites a tweet by Carolina Hurricanes beat writer Chip Alexander, who spoke with Francis about the rumors.
Any potential trade by the Pens for Staal would likely have to take place during the offseason rather than before the upcoming trade deadline because of Staal's current contract.
Staal is in the second year of a 10-year contract that pays him $60 million with a yearly cap hit of $6 million.
Meanwhile, the Penguins are currently about $1 million under the salary cap and would have to shed several contracts in order to make room for Staal.
In his three seasons with the Hurricanes, Staal has put up 28 goals and 57 assists with a plus-minus rating of minus-17.
