Report: Flight From Pittsburgh To Florida Has Close Call With Drone
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The FAA is investigating after a drone was reported near the flight path of a plane that took off from Pittsburgh and was landing this morning at an airport in Florida.
The small drone was reported flying in the approach path of a JetBlue flight that was landing at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport.
In a statement to the Sun Sentinel, the FAA said: "The crew of JetBlue 2007, an Airbus A320, reported seeing an unmanned aircraft system on approach to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at 9:37 a.m. today. The FAA will investigate."
The plane was carrying 95 passengers.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office was also notified about a drone flying about 1,000 feet high and 15 miles west of the airport. The FAA says the pilot did not take evasive action.
Despite a helicopter search, police say they could not find the drone.
According to the FAA, pilots are reporting an increase in close calls with drones. So far in 2015, nearly 7000 incidents have been reported. That's triple the number reported the previous year.
