Rankin Police Officer Holds $1 Million Powerball Ticket
RANKIN (KDKA) - There's new information on the winner of that $1 million Powerball ticket sold in Rankin last weekend.
We don't yet know the winner's name yet, but KDKA's Brenda Waters did find out what he does for a living.
The unnamed officer won the money in Rankin and he is a Rankin cop.
The police officer is in his 30s and has been a part-time officer for about a year. He is married with three children and works two part time jobs to make ends meet.
His police chief, Ryan Wooten, explained how it happened.
"Yesterday, the officer walks into my office and he goes, 'Chief, can you look at this ticket?'" said Chief Wooten. "I said, 'Not today.' These guys like to play jokes."
But the chief soon found out this was no joke.
"So, we go down to the Super Stop, we slide it through the machine and its like a one and all of these zeroes," Chief Wooten said.
Six zeroes to be exact, and since the winning ticket was purchased at the Super Stop convenience store, the owner gets a $5,000 bonus from the state lottery.
Chief Wooten says the officer seems to have no plans to quit his job.
Meanwhile, Brenda had to wonder if maybe the chief had won the million bucks because he could not stop smiling.
"I did not win. The chief did not win," said Wooten.
