PSU Student From Gibsonia Injured In Fatal Turnpike Accident
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- Penn State University says a student was killed in a one-vehicle accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as she and six others were returning from collecting donations for the student-run THON charitable campaign.
The university website identified the student as 19-year-old Vitalya Sepot, a sophomore from Branford, Connecticut.
The website says Sepot was a passenger in the car returning to State College from the Philadelphia area when the accident occurred Sunday just before 2 p.m. in Charlestown Township in Chester County.
The six other students in the vehicle were taken to a hospital.
According to the university, one of those students is from Gibsonia. She is identified as 18-year-old Victoria Barrett. There's no word on her condition.
In a press release on their website, Penn State's Vice President of Student Affairs Damon Sims says: "The Penn State community and all who know the good work done through student involvement in THON are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our hopes are with the students injured, whose release from the hospital we are eager to see, but our hearts are with Tally's family and friends, whose terrible loss we mourn."
State police were investigating the cause of the crash.
Sepot was majoring in graphic design.
The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, referred to as THON, is a yearlong campaign to raise funds for the fight against pediatric cancer.
