Propel Braddock Hills HS Put On Lockdown After Reported Gun Incident

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A local school was on lockdown Monday afternoon after an alleged gun incident.

Propel Braddock Hills High School was put on lockdown for more than an hour after dismissal. Multiple police departments initially responded and set up a perimeter around the school.

The school is located in the Braddock Hills Shopping Center.

Initial reports indicated there may have been an incident involving a gun, but police have yet to officially confirm anything.

Police say two people are in custody and two weapons were reportedly been confiscated. A third person was taken into custody, but later released.

Shaquir Gilmore, 18, of Rankin and a 16-year-old boy have both been charged. They are students at the school.

Parents say they weren't told much information as they waited for the situation to unfold.

"I'm angry, I was scared for my kids, I mean everything -- nobody knows nothing," said Keisha Barker.

"My mind is -- I don't know what to think right now," said parent Jaquan Leech.

Propel operates an elementary school and a high school on the site and there are approximately 700 students.

Parents had gathered outside the schools, anxiously waiting for word on their children. Students have now started to come out of the building.

School officials say they're looking into new security measures.

"We don't have any metal detectors at the school, but we're looking into cancelling school for tomorrow and we're going to meet tomorrow morning and discuss and future plans that we have," said Propel Dir. of Operations Richard Snyder.

On Tuesday, school officials released the following statement:

"As we reflect upon yesterday's isolated incident at Propel Braddock Hills High School, we are grateful that students, faculty and staff are safe. Families choose to send their students to Propel Schools because of our culture of safety and dignity. We will continue to review and update policies and exercises that are in the very best interest of student safety, at all times and on all campuses."
