Private Home Serves As Unique Polling Place In Beechview
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Doctors have begun making house calls again, so why not have voting at home?
Neighbors in a Beechview district came close this Election Day by voting at their neighbor's house.
Long lines stretched out into playgrounds and down streets at polling places throughout the Pittsburgh area. And, then, there's the 20th Ward, 2nd District.
"I was a bit surprised and confused if I was in the right place," said one voter.
Mixed in with all the schools, all the churches, all the public buildings, some of the residents in Beechview went to a polling place in a private home, voting in the garage.
That polling place happens to be the home of Marlo Miller.
"We are a small polling place. There's only 200 and some people registered here," said Miller, majority clerk.
She says on a good day, she might top out at 140 voters.
"It's very personal. You feel like you're going to visit somebody. I like it," said one voter.
"It's very convenient. There's never a long line," another voter said.

The homeowner grew up with this. Miller's parents first opened their home to voters.
"You had to have a separate entrance. Instead of coming through the house, in order to get into the garage, you had to have a separate door. So he qualified for that," said Miller.
For voters, what's not to like?
"Going to someone's house that's in your neighborhood is pretty convenient," one voter said. "They always have lots of cookies and refreshments, so it's like a treat to vote, too."
But the biggest advantage, according to one of the voters, "Parking's great."
