Pennsylvanians Head To The Polls For Primary Day

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's Primary Day in Pennsylvania and voters have been heading to the polls all day to cast their ballots in an election season that's seen some unprecedented twists and turns.

All eyes are on the race for the Democratic and Republican nominations for president.

Pennsylvania is the biggest prize on this Primary Tuesday, but ballots are also being cast in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Rhode Island.

A new CBS News poll has Republican Donald Trump with a large lead in Pennsylvania over both Ted Cruz and John Kasich. On the Democratic side, the CBS News poll has front-runner Hillary Clinton with about a 10-point lead over Bernie Sanders.

"We need a change with people losing jobs," said voter Richard Woods.

"I have only been eligible to vote for a few," voter Wyatt Silverman, of Shadyside, said. "I've voted in all of them so far, but definitely making a specific point to vote in this one."

"If you're not happy with something, and you don't vote, don't criticize the people that's in there," added voter Joyce Allen.

There are some statewide races of interest in our area, too.

The primaries are being held for Pennsylvania Attorney General and for the U.S. Senate.

In the Attorney General race, Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala, Jr. is facing off against John Morganelli and Josh Shapiro, on the Democratic side.  In the Republican race, it's John Rafferty against Joe Peters.

Four Democrats are vying to take on U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey in November. The Senate primary consists of Braddock Mayor John Fetterman, former chief of staff to Gov. Tom Wolf Katie McGinty, former two-term congressman Joe Sestak and Allegheny County manufacturing shop owner Joe Vodvarka.

With more than 1,000 polling places around the county, by late afternoon, there were no reports of any major problems. Only some isolated incidents of first-time voters not having proper ID or voter complaints about changes in polling locations.

"The machines all seem to be working, the workers all showed up," said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. "You have 1,300 polling places, I'm sure there's a blip here and there."

The polls in Pennsylvania are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
