Crews Continue To Restore Power After Friday Storms

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Thousands were still without power Saturday after storms swept through the area Friday afternoon.

Over in Jefferson Hills, workers removed a downed tree and live utility wire that was blocking Arch Street. Tim Prince and his family were told not to go near the still live wire. They were trapped on their dead end street, waiting for help.

"No one showed, no one ever came until I called KDKA and complained," Prince said, "and told them we were trapped and my wife is handicapped."

Prince realizes utilities were busy, but he waited almost 24 hours before calling KDKA.

"Within an hour of calling [KDKA], they came and started and said, 'We got our crew on the way now,'" he said.

A power outage also forced the closure of the Boyce Park Wave Pool on Saturday. It is expected to reopen Sunday.

Over in Bellevue, high winds and heavy rains caused a huge tree to collapse on utility lines Friday. Two poles snapped, leaving lines covering Meade Street from almost one end to the other.

Utility workers are making progress. The downed tree is no longer in the street, and utility wires are being replaced, but a lot of people still don't have power, and they're getting nervous.

Some residents lost their air conditioning, and they're hoping the power comes back before everything in their refrigerator goes bad.

"My freezer is smelling, and I opened the bottom to look," resident Janet Christie said, "and I know I'm going to have to throw away stuff I just bought yesterday."

"It reminds you that you are really not in control, so I'm trying to relax about it and be calm," resident Mary Ann Haffey said, "because there's not much I can do about it anyway."
