Post Office Finds 1 Keepsake Containing Ashes Of Woman's Brother

OAKDALE (KDKA) -- It's a small jewel box with what appears to be a small silver locket inside, but in Jennifer Buhite's world, it's so much more than that.

"I'm happy I got part of him back, but there's still part of him out there," says Buhite.

Her story is an emotional one.

Buhite's brother died of a heart attack just after Thanksgiving. He was only 50. It ripped her apart.

She had a portion of his cremains placed in three silver lockets. She kept one and sent two to her sisters.

Weeks later, all of it gone, lost by the Post Office. All they found was the label.

That's when KDKA's Marty Griffin got involved.

"I got a hold of you the night before. By the next day, when you started getting a hold of them, they started calling me," says Buhite. "I started getting phone calls and stuff I had never gotten in a whole months period."

The Postal Service says they put a team on in, in several states, and found the first locket late last week. They are still after the second, and quite frankly, can't explain how they lost it.

"They trusted us with something near and dear, Ms. Buhite's brother's ashes, mailed them through one of our post offices and the contents of that box did not get where they were supposed to go," said Tad Kelley, of the U.S. Postal Service.

Buhite is pleased she has one of two pendants back, found in a storage bin of sorts in Atlanta. However, she wants them both and wants to help.

"I will fly there. I will buy my own ticket. I will search," she says. "If they will allow me to search for it; and if I can't find it, then maybe I'm just going to accept it for what it is, unfortunately."
