Port Authority Investigators Meet With D.A.'s Office About Bus Crash
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Investigators met with prosecutors Wednesday about the Port Authority bus crash last month that sent a bus over a hillside and injured a driver.
They're trying to decide if charges should be filed.
Two Port Authority Police accident reconstruction specialists arrived at the third floor offices of Allegheny County District Attorney Steve Zappala this morning.
They had evidence in hand to discuss whether any charges should be filed after the crash that resulted in a Port Authority bus rolling down to Evergreen Road from Interstate 279 in the city's Perry North neighborhood.
Juliann Maier, the driver whose bus rolled over the hillside, was hospitalized.
"She was laying there, and all I heard her say was, 'I lost control,' and that's all I heard her say," said Jim Glancy, a witness.
But the Port Authority argued that two drivers who left the Ross Garage inbound toward town were driving recklessly and at unsafe speeds, and that one left the scene and didn't report the accident.
The lawyer for the driver whose bus stayed on the interstate disputes that his client drove recklessly.
"At all times, I mean, he had his hands on the wheel and was watching where he was going," Bruce Carcia, Thomas Frauens' attorney, said last week.
But at some point the buses collided, which, according to the Port Authority, set in motion what could have been a fatal crash.
Maier survived.
But clearly, the Port Authority is looking at the prospect of filing charges. We should know what they decide in the next few days.
