Police: Thief Breaks Store's Glass, Steals 2 Bicycles From Business

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Police are using surveillance video to track down a brazen burglar who got away with thousands of dollars' worth of high-tech bicycles from a shop in Squirrel Hill.

The burglary happened just after 3:15 a.m. on March 18 at the Pro Bikes store in the 5800-block of Forbes Avenue.

The surveillance footage shows a man casing the shop on his own bicycle, and then returning on foot.

He breaks the front glass window and steals two specialized "FatBoy" bicycles, worth about $2,000 each. The suspect then rides off on one of the stolen bikes, while holding the other alongside him.

"Pretty shocking [that] someone would take a hammer to the door and just… walk right in," said Pro Bikes Service Manager Dan Rodriguez.

He told KDKA's Kym Gable the thick wheels and sophisticated hydraulics and shifting systems gives the "FatBoy" bikes their hefty price tags.

For a thief on the hunt for valuable loot, the bike shop was likely the perfect target.

"Other than a jewelry store, I can't imagine anything that's more expensive than just popping into a bike shop and grabbing the first thing you see," said Rodriguez.
